Just back from the CBK Grand National and Scurry. What a brilliant day out. Well organised with plenty of entertainment for wrinklies like Joy and me, children and grandchildren. Food and drink in abundance and the excitement of the sweepstake! (I’m not normally a gambling man but temptation got the better of me. What a result! My horse came in first! Now I’m just deciding what to spend my 10p winnings on….)
Leaving Shanklin by Island Line the Lewis’s senior accompanied by grandchildren Jacob and Eben with Auntie Chloe in attendance joined the Steam Railway at Smallbrook then puff-puffed all the way to Ashey. The whole journey, including connections took less than an hour and a half. (OK, I know we could have driven there in 20 minutes but that would have been too easy and not nearly so much fun!)
Dogs were petted and ponies oohed over. Some of the party got over-excited during the races but the threat of no dinner soon got Chloe to behave again!
Several ice-creams and other snacks-bad-for-your-teeth later we headed home on the last train.
At just £5.00 per adult (nothing for children) this must also be one of the Island’s best-value events. We’d never been before but are already looking forward to next year’s event. Highly recommended.
What’s this got to do with Avenue Road Dental Practice? Absolutely nothing, but sometimes it’s good to get away from the day-job, recharge our batteries and hopefully provide a better service for our patients when we’re back at work!

On January 21st 2013, Philip Lewis traveled to Milan, Italy for an ESCD Board Meeting. He flew at 07:00am, then arrived for the meeting at 10:30am. The meeting lasted for 6 hours, to 16:30pm. Then he flew straight back home, arriving just before midnight.
Philip says: It was a great meeting, very productive. However, I wouldn’t recommend this type of holiday, much too short!
Below shows some of Philips colleagues within the meeting:
Philip Lewis, who has just given a course of lectures in London on the early detection of mouth cancer, attended by hundreds of dentists and dental staff, was speaking ahead of Mouth Cancer Action Month. He said: “Dental professionals are essential in the fight against this killer as they see patients regularly and, unlike doctors, always look inside patients’ mouths. This is a disease which, with proper training, is usually easy to spot in its early stages and it’s great to see so many colleagues now learning how to do this. “Patients should be aware of the risks, which include smoking and drinking spirits, but should also be aware 25 per cent of victims have no recognizable lifestyle factors. “For this reason everyone should be vigilant. Patients should ask their dentist if he or she is carrying out a thorough early detection screening at least once a year because early detection saves lives. It’s as simple as that.”
Philip Lewis, dentist at Avenue Road Dental Practice and Joy Lewis, Avenue Road Dental Receptionist recently appeared at the Houses of Parliament, located in London UK. Both appeared to attend the launch of Mouth Cancer Awareness Month.
